My neighbour's outside with a battery charger attached to his battery ( for the last 2 hours) cause he says it's dead. But the hood light is lit, and when he tried firing it up, all it did was make a clicking sound. I said maybe it's the starter, but he doesn't think so. What's the problem?

It is most likely the battery, it could be the terminals. Corrosion, or improper fit can cause a no-start even with lights and radio coming on. The new cars sometimes have those stupid copper ring cable ends, and they stretch out. I had a bad time with one until I removed it and replaced it with an older style cable end. Depending on the make/model/year, it could be starter solenoid. If it is the starter, he could try crawling under with a hammer and whacking the starter. Sometimes that gets a car going, then it can be driven into the shop. Finally, if it is a standard transmission, it can be push started and driven to the shop for analysis and repair.

Just a dead battery that is not taking a charge. MY 500 amp Snap-On battery charger will start a car with a dead battery . One of those little buzz box battery chargers will whimp out and machine gun clicking. After the battery has called it quits there is no chemical left to connect electrons too. And attempting recharging only causes sulfurous smell.

You could try replacing it with another battery (which you are sure in in good condition) and if the car starts then it is his probably which is needed to be changed. You can also try to put the battery to another car and if it will not start then the battery is at fault. But if you already replace it and still the car wouldnt start it will probably be the starter. But before doing any of these be sure that your connections were propper and still it wouldnt start. A battery not properly installed, will let you probably hear only a click.

It is not the starter. That is a low batt. He needs to have it tested at a battery place such as sears batteryplus champion checkers whee ever. And he also needs to check is alt. If he gets it running he could test it with a volt meter. It should be around 14 for a good alt. If it is then test power from batt. That will tell you wich is bad or if both are badd. As for the light Well there could be just enough jucie to keep the lights on. Just like a flash light when it goes bad. it dont just go from bright to off.

Sounds like the battery. There is enough juice to turn the light on, and to activate the solenoid on the starter. The best way to check the battery is to use a meter and measure the voltage. It should be 11-14 volts without the charger hooked up to it.

the battery is STILL dead, and the light is on because the charger is connected to the battery. the light is getting its power from the charger.

Have a professional do this operation!!Sounds like you guys are having too much trouble doing this!

The light is on due to the fact it takes little amperage to turn it on and starting will take alot of amperage. With the charger on it for 2 hours it should of started. Check all connections for corrosion and tightness. If it don`t start in the morning you probably have a bad cell

you could be right ,it could either be that or a bad connection,,id offer to help him,and suggest the connections on the starter,or the battery its self may be bad,one will still light the lights up on it,but not have enough power to start the car,he may get it going, but in 2 hours it should have took enough charge to start it,good luck.

well theres a small plate with a little arm and when u turn the key it makes the small arm hit the plate and make a circuit (that's the clicking sound) and if water or moisture gets under the hood it corrodes the little plate making the connection between the arm and the plate bad so it cant turn the engine over so he has to clean that plate
