The computer needs the hard drive to be reformatted and the recovery disks installed but I have pictures that I need to back up. The computer will not start up or go into safe mode. It was suggested by HP to use the hard drive as a secondary HD on another computer. Have no idea of how to do that but if I had instructions for that my father could probably do that using his computer. Thanks for any info that will help me save my pics. I also was told that there are places to take my computer and that they have a way to copy the hard drive ???? Thanks again.

Have a qualified tech open up your CPU, take the hard drive, mount it on his work computer and burn the pictures to a CD. I wouldn't recommend that your dad do it, since he may void the warranty.

Explain the computer will not start or go into safe mode. Does it even go through the boot process? You may just only need to fix the boot sector.

How? Put in the Windows boot disk. When it get to the screen that says install or repair, choose repair.

When it comes to the next screen choose the drive. The when the command prompt comes up type fixmbr and then press enter. The next command prompt type fixboot and press enter.

Then reboot the computer without the windows boot disk. You haven't done any damage to the hard drive, so if that doesn't fix the problem follow the other answers with an external hard drive enclosure. Make sure it is USB capable. Be sure the hard drive is set to slave. Have a friend hook it to their computer and recover your pictures.

Use the harddrive in an external hard drive enclosure. Then you can have the computer fixed or replaced. Then attach the hard drive with the old drive inside to the usb port of the computer and use explore to get to the photos. There is a chance the old hard drive is dead which case you will need to send the drive and have it copied. PC World magazine usually has an advertisement for one company which will collect the data off of dead hard drives.

Your best bet would be to buy an external USB hard drive enclosure. Remove your hard drive from your computer, mount it in the enclosure, then plug it into a USB port on your father's computer and copy your files to his drive.

You should be able to find one for $15-20 or so online.

yeah..use it as a secondary hardrive on another computer

if u have no idea what kind of hard drive u have (EIDE or SATA) and no idea on what the cables inside ur computer are for..then u'd better not mess around with anything and let someone who knows how to do it do everything
