A well is drilled and the gas is pumped out (unless the pressure is so high that it comes out naturally). The gases are then processed to separate them into different components (such as methane, ethane, propane, etc.). Another technique is to hydrofract (fracture stone using water) coal seams to release methane gas, which is then collected and transported.

They drill for gas and usually gas is over top of oil deposits or are highly carbonaceous materials. The gas can be trapped in sands or gravel or under salt domes. Hydro-fracking is more of a newer method to make old wells start producing again by fracturing the rock down deep so that the trapped gases have more room to migrate thru rock layers that prior were impervious to gas flow

They drill for it same as oil. In Oklahoma there were a number of oil well sites that end up having natural gas. The oil company capped the wells because they weren't interested.
