First off, I'm a Music Major, and we were discussing Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I noticed that it required a CD all to itself.

It got me thinking. If I remember correctly, the original reason for the invention of the CD was to hold a rather long piece of classical or romantic era music, as I seem to remember seeing it on "Who wants to be a millionare?" or some show of the likes.

Is my memory correct? And if so, what song was it created for?

Or do I just have bad memory at the age of 19?

I never heard it associated with a specific piece of music. It was intended to be a successor to cassette tapes, featuring no moving parts, resistance to damage, greater capacity, and smaller size. It was a sensible next step in holding music data.

They were invented and became popular because of all the data they can hold - wheather it be music or information. This coincided with lasers becoming more refined, accurate, and affordable in which to read the CD.

Compact Discs were specifically just another step of storing many data. Now, you can store any kind of files in USB. These contain like 4 Gigabytes which is another great capacity.
