quite a while yet. reasons:
packers- coach mccarthy and GM thompson are built relying upon the draft. they want to draft many players, and build them through experience. its all about patience here. while favre is the only reliable qb that will bring the team wins, rodgers still has question marks as far as how good he is, although he has FINALLY shown signs of maturity this preseason.
bears- has a great defense and offense that is being built up. a very good team that will defeat the rest in this division simply because the rest of the teams in the North division are young.
lions- these guys have never stopped building since barry sanders retired. their offense has improved, but it will still take some time to build that defense.
vikings- here's the hold up in the division. these guys have been going backwards since mike tice was for some reason fired.
i would say the division as a whole should be a lot better in 5 years. keep in mind, all these teams did once play in the toughest division together (NFC Central) in the 1990's, so it is not impossible for it to happen again.

Favre needs to get out of the way so Green Bay can move forward--the defense is getting better. Detroit needs to find a long-term solution at QB. Minnesota has a good defense, but that offense is pitiful--rookie RB, 2nd year QB, and zero quality receivers.
However, the Bears need to figure out if Rex is the answer at QB. If he has a shaky season, I'm afraid of what this division will look like next year.
i would say 3-4 years until the North is relevant again. The NFL goes through cycles, and right now the AFC is the dominant conference just like the NFC was during the 1990s.
EDIT: Don't be delusional, my fellow Bears fans. Grossman needs to step up this year. This is a contract year for him, and if he doesn't convince the Bears that he's the solution to the QB problem, he will be gone. Griese is not a long-term solution, and Orton is not a starting QB. I'm just saying, if he has a shaky year, this division will be pretty bad next year.

When Brett Favre finally retires I think Aaron Rodgers can take over and do some damage, and thier rookie RB Brandon Jackson has star potential. The Lions are a project, but thier young recieving core is among the best in the league, and as soon as they develop a defense they will have a well balnced team. The vikes also have a young QB and RB with a lot of potential. The thing about the NFC North is they're all young, So I say 4 years, and they all become contenders.

Bears are the only good stable team. The Lions have ne wtalent on offense but there secondary is weak. The vikings secondary is also weak and have a inexpeierenced qb. The packers have farve who has bean caught bu his age. I say a year or 2.

i agree that this division sucks i'm a vikes fan.
detroit will be good when they get rid of millen he drafts 2 many wideouts and he has a losin record. then they can rebuild. they should've drafted a QB like brady quinn
green bay will be good once brett retires and they find a young mobile QB for the future. possibly aaron rodgers.
the vikes, they'll be good once they get a solid QB and adrian peterson comes into his own

Yeah Chicago shines , but that isn't hard to do in that division. Green Bay needs to move past the Brett era and The lions need to learn how to pray...hard and long.

How long will it take to move the Lions, Packers, and Vikings out and put the Colts, Bengals, and Chiefs in?

few years, the lions offense is there, their defense is coming along, the packers defense is there, their offense needs a little improvement, and same with the Vikings, I'd say about one to three years
