16-20 weeks is when they can tell on an ultrasound - they baby has private parts now but before 16 weeks the male and female gentals look the same because they haven't developed yet, they start out looking alike.

I had amniocentesis with my younger daughter. This is a test mainly done on older women to check for conditions such as Down Syndrome. It can also reveal the baby's sex and is more accurate than ultrasounds. After I had my test done, one of the people at the lab called me and asked if I wanted to know the sex. I said I did. So I spent nearly six months knowing that I was going to have a girl.

The baby's gender is not visible until 18-20 weeks. I had an u/s at 17 weeks and the tech told me he was 95% positive it was a girl... and 2 weeks later at a second u/s I was told I was having a boy.... and I did. It is really not visible until 18-20 weeks.

Sign up on this website. It will send you a weekly email and tell you all the info about the fetus. It was great getting the emails during the pregnancy of my twins. I could see what was developing every week - pictures and info.
If you get the doctor to guess the sex too early they might be wrong. They told me my babies were 2 girls and one was actually a boy... teehee. surprise.
To answer your question it is 5 months before the genitals develop.

I was able to find out at 12 weeks. Just ask what can be seen when you get an ultrasound.

They will usually tell you they can tell at about 16 weeks along. Ask your doctor at your next appointment when you can find out.
