Male betta's are about 8-10 months old when they are sold at the pet stores
females are a bit younger when they are sold, about 4-6 months old

The best age to breed them is when they're about 9-18 months old, but can be bred until they're about 3 years old

hope that helps
Good luck

Bettas can be bred as early as 8-10 months old, but they have to show all the sigs of readiness before even trying.

It doesn't matter what age they are.

Is there a bubble nest at the top of the tank like this one?http://farm1.static.flickr.com/47/156121002_ab14bb0936.jpg
that means there ready to breed! :o)

breeding bettas isnt as simple as putting a male and female together, it does require sets and it takes research.

You will need to condition them.

Anyway back to the question at hand. Most breeders sell bettas at 3 months. This is the BARE min for breeding. At this age the pair may be unsuccessful as it comes with experience.

If you bought your bettas from a petstore, they are on AVG. around 1-1.5 years old. So they are still of breeding age.

Again it sounds like you need more research and it sounds like you didnt condition them.

For more info on breeding i encourage you to look at many betta sites and also my own. http://www.bcaquatics.com
