Because Germany had already invaded and occupied France at the time, and because that was the most direct route to attack the German forces -- both those who were in France and those who were on the other side of France.
As for your comment about liberals -- it's hard to even figure out what you're talking about. The only current instance involving the US of on army occupying another country (the way Germany occupied France) is the US occupation of Iraq.... and possibly the US forces in Afghanistan.
But that's an entirely different strategic situation, so there is no valid analogy to be drawn with the D-Day invasion.

Oh, I enjoy these Q & A's! Yes, we "invaded" (as Liberals would call it) France, because we were not having much success in "invading" Germany directly. Let's face it, with France having a beach front, it was much easier to land there...The D-Day invasion was by ship, plane, parachute, glider, foot and motor vehicles. The German's put up a good fight, but the Head honcho for Germany was on vacation back where it was safe and the acting commander did not want to believe that the Allies had landed.
At any rate, since the French, the English and the Americans were allies, I certainly would not call it an "invasion" when an ally (France) said, basically, we need help, please assist.
I like that comparison about Saddam the Insane and his refusal to allow the U.N. to inspect.
See, people really do know what President Bush was up to and know he was correct to "invade"!

Your analogy is absolutely ridiculous. To Daniel L. above, We attacked Germany because Germany declared war on the US. Should we have waited until they attacked us like they did France, England, and most of Europe and part of Africa or like the Japanese did us?

In many ways "Germany" had extended their borders to the border of France as well as through other countries. One could also say the US's border didn't always extend to the Pacific Ocean.

- Front door answer to your Back Door question...
We went into Iraq because we believed they were in incompliance with U.N. Article 1441.
Saddam Hussein wouldn't allow inspectors inside his country, although it was required of him by the U.N.
That being said, we (America) wasn't fighting a country (Afghanistan). We were fighting Terrorists (radical arab extremists) called, Al Queda.
Al Queda exists all over the world, so we chose to fight them in a country located in the middle of the Arab world.
The Democrats (Lib's) and the Republicans BOTH agreed to fight them there.
As an American, I am deeply grateful for the sacrifice Cindy Sheehan's son gave for my freedom by fighting the enemy outside of the United States. I wouldn't want his mom watching my back if they invaded here.
That was your point, was it not?
And, do you really think an international border is safe haven from a destructive act on our great nation? Most Americans don't live under a rock like your pretend to do.

Germany occupied France.
Al-Q was not welcomed in the country of a secular, controlling dictator such as Saddam.
