He can get in a lot of trouble if he doesn't pay. He needs to talk to the courts soon! Hopefully they'll understand and allow him to pay later

Let's see, for starters the arrears will build, interest will be applied, the letters will keep coming, followed by court dates for contempt and then jail time. It's a spiral affect and once it starts, it's hard to get out of. A better approach would be to respond to the letters honey. You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip and even the courts will agree that what he was making is no longer what he is making and they can adjust the amount on a temporary basis until he's back at work. It won't stop the payments completely, and they may even order him to get a job anywhere...even McDonalds, so that he is paying something. On top of that they may make him provide proof of places that he's applied.
It's not a great situation to be in honey, but they don't look at the family it affects now, they look at his first responsibility and make sure that he complies with court orders. Have him call his case worker and discuss what is going on. They are going to have far more suggestions than any of us.

He should have contacted them immediately upon being laid off because now he's racking up arrearages. So what I would suggest is that he calls the Court (or CSE) FIRST THING tomorrow morning and ask what he can do in regards to his payments.
Is he receiving unemployment? If so, a portion should be paid out toward child support.
If he isn't receiving unemployment, he needs to be out working a "get by" job to pay his support until he finds another job in his field.

The courts do not care where he gets the money. His FIRST AND FOREMOST RESPONSIBILITY IS CHILD SUPPORT. They don't care if he is homeless, hungry and desperate. Child support first.
He needs to find a way to pay it NOW, not later. He can be prosecuted and put into jail for non-payment of child support. They are already working on that if he is geting letters from the courts.
Get the arrearage paid now and stay current on the support!

if he doesnt pay he is in contempt of the order. they dont care if you have lost your job, you must pay some way and if they have to send you to jail to prove a point, they will. if he continues to be negligent, they will take his taxes next year, he can go to jail and basically be labeled as a deadbeat. he needs to atleast file for unemployment and look for a job. laid off is no excuse, he needs to find a way to pay. those letters arent going to stop. he can get backed up and owe big time.

What about his unemployment insurance? If he doesn't pay his child support the State CAN garnish his entire unemployment check to pay it.

he needs to respond to those letters, and let someone know he is only temporary out of work. if he doesnt, he could very easily go to jail
