Not really, as you can't replace hardware with software or something like that (well let's not talk about virtual machines or emulators since in this case you don't need just an emulation...).
There is nothing that you can do in order to get extra RAM except for buying more.

Vista basic will not work properly with out minimum amount of ram/memory the more ram the better. 1GB for any Vista is minimum in my opinion. 512 ram will work but it will run slow. You can add ram to your lap top and find on sale at places like Fry's Electronic, Circuit City etc. You should go to http://www.mocrosoft.com/support and run the check they have to see if your lap top is vista compatible. If you have not opened the new program you may be able to take back for a refund. Just adding ram may not be all that is needed to run Vista on your lap top so best to check first by visiting Microsoft's web site and run the check first.
Hope this helps

On the back of the laptop ther should be a small rectancular panel with 4 screws in it. Make sure the computer is NOT connected to the power and turned off BEFORE removing it. Inside that panel you should see a RAM stick. Very carefully take it out and install the 512mb Stick and replace the panel.
VERY IMPORTANT that you don't wear anything like nylon or such materials when doing this as it generates static electricity and will ruin the RAM or the computer, perhaps both if big enough charge.

with Vista 512 is the minim needed to install it but it needs at least 1 gig of ram to run right (or as well as possible)
2 gigs is considered normal for vista

Windows Vista needs alot of memory to operate efficiently. Although the minimum requirement is 512Mb, you would be happier with 1Gb or more of memory. You may even be able to get it to load on your system with 256Mb of RAM, but it will be so slow and seem to freeze up that you won't like it.
I'd recommend that you spend the money on a memory upgrade.
If your laptop is working now, point it to http://www.crucial.com and use their online scanner to determine how much and what type of memory you can add.

As popular as Vista is, it's not because of it's usefulness. Vista has a BUNCH of problems with the hardware not working with the software and mostly the software not interacting with the software that you try to install. How bad is it? Not even Windows XP will recognize Vista except that it is a Windows OS.

If you are going to just upgrade to 512MB dont bother putting Vista in. With your onboard graphics you won't even be able to run Aero with less that 1MB of ram and even with 1GB you wont run very well. Ram is cheap. Put in as much of the fastest ram you can.

I don't think Vista will run very well on 512k memory. You should have 1 gig of ram memory for Vista
