The stains were left by various colognes and cosmetics either alchohol or chemical based. It appears that they have taken the smoothness from the varnish.

It depends on the shade of the dresser. If it is dark, you can take some instant coffee (tsp) and dissolve it in warm water. Wipe the top of the dresser off first, (remove dust) then pour the mixture on and spread it around with a lint free cloth. Once that is done, take another clean cloth and wipe it down. Like polishing it. The coffee will fill in the stains. If it is a lighter wood, use tea and water, in between, make the mixture weaker.

I spilled nail polish on my beautiful dresser and there is no way to fix it. I had to buy an electric sander and take the top finish off and re-stain and re-vanish. Sorry, there is no easy fix.

They probably took the finish off. It will need some spot finishing and then more polyurethane. If it's an antique, I could call a furniture repair place to handle it.

you got your work cut out guy. if you want it like new you are going to have to sand it then re-stain it. Then hopefully you don't stain it to much cause it wont match the rest.
