Often wondered if intelligence IS indeed a key factor in couple happiness. The difference of intelligence can inhibit communication, problem solving, and decision-making as a "family".

Well, but it may also bring complex issues into play! Intelligent people are usually very complex and difficult to understand. their motivations are complex and their ways usually are not face value due to its complexities! Many times that causes even more complexity.

"Intelligence" is a pretty difficult entity to measure.

Does it mean schooling? Or rather, the capacity to learn?

Intelligent people have communication problems too. Some are shy and won't express their heartfelt wishes regardless of the pain & hardship it causes them. Some are bullies and want their own way simply because they think they're more intelligent than anyone else. And some can't be honest even if they try.

More important in a relationship are the ability to listen, to be honest, and to put 100% of your energy into nourishing the relationship. The rest is called compatibility, and intelligence equality falls in at about 10th place.

Believe me, I've been there & done that...

Some people will argue that "ignorance is bliss"...

You are almost saying that in order to be happy one must be educated...because intelligence is not something that one is simply born with...you acquire it with time and experience correct? I am positive that there are truly happy uneducated people out there because they might not have had the opportunity to obtain a proper education...
Personally I believe the key to a successful relationship is respect, but perhaps someone needs to be intelligent in order to realize that? Relationships really do go hand in hand with intelligence, but I don't think it is KEY, sometimes common sense is enough to tell you that cheating on your spouse is wrong. And I have definitely known very intelligent professors who are miserable in their personal lives. But you do have an interesting theory going on there, it's definitely debatable!

Intelligence is only a contributing factor to a happy marriage/couple.

Like my elders used to say, "You'll never truly KNOW a person, until you live with him/her under-one-roof (marriage)".

it is in my opinion, in any conflict/problem, usually most people solve a problem through emotion/personality-type. doesn't matter if you're intelligent, coz you could be intelligent but still afraid to confront a problem head-on, even if you're right.

if you're talking about a happy marriage, i'd say not high Intelligence Quotient (IQ) in individuals. rather couples with higher individual Emotional Quotients (EQ) will be better.

Hope this helps, Peace.

There are different types of intelligence. The one you seem to mean is the intellectual type, which is fine and *can* lead to effective communication.

Another type of intelligence, though, is that dealing with interpersonal relationships. Two people with that type should do well together.

I suppose there's intelligence and then there's wisdom. If you say they're the same thing, then the answer is definitely yes.
