Clorox (undiluted), WD 40 or Windex.
Seriously. (Kills scorpions too.)

For 2 bucks you can get a spray can that will squirt a stream 20 feet into a nest. It is filled with a chemical that will drop flying wasps down to the ground and kill every wasp and egg in the nest. Why improvise when this way is guaranteed to get results?

You want to look for an insecticide that has Cypermethrin in it to knock them out quick. Go to the garden part of the supercenter and read labels on bottled stuff and there should be something there. Put it in your sprayer and wait until early evening when they are quiet and in the nest. Wear long sleeves and a hat and you should be fine. If you wait until dusk, they are less likely to find you.
Forget the Clorox, etc--that just makes them wet and cranky.

Homemade? Raid's hornet spray will kill the hornets and the nest for a while ($4.00). If you are concerned about the environment, then I would go with the Clorox or Windex but I dunno how effective they are and besides, Clorox is really not that great around plants and the Ammonia in the windex maybe harmful too.

I tried rose dust and it worked great, not intended for them but they track it in and that's that. you can dust the area outside the nest, after dusk, the next day there gone!
Read carefully before using.

you can't get close enough & enough spray volume on the critters before they nail you.
use a hose end sprayer with either cheap laundry soap ( works best & cheap), or dishwashing liquid, set on any thing above 2 oz, it will knock them down keep spraying, & drown them, & give you volume, & distance, great for fire ants too

The only thing I've ever heard of killing hornets is gasoline. And I've also been told you should only attempt it at night when they are not active.
