Hey all!! Thinking of doing a daytrip/evening in Richmond VA with my boyfriend sometime this weekend. Never been there before....advice for what to see, do? Someplace we could walk around a sigtsee a bit and then settle in for a good meal and a glass of wine would be nice. Is it worth the trip?

I think it's about a 2 1/2 or 3 hour drive.

I very much enjoy Richmond. There are a large amount of museums, such as the Science Museum of Virginia, the Museum of the Confederacy, Virginia Historical Society, etc. There is the Canal Walk and Browns Island downtown. There is the Richmond National Battlefield Park system. You can take a walk/drive down Monument Avenue. There is Maymont Park, which consists of the Dooley Mansion, an interpretive center, animals, and some beautiful grounds. There are several malls throughout the area, and a great shopping area in Carytown (Cary Street between Thomas and Boulevard). There is the Byrd Theater in Carytown.

I know which restaurants that I like, but I'm feeling that you are looking for something different. There is the Can Can Basserie, which is a French stylistic restaurant in Carytown. This is the classic French Cooking that America fell in love with long ago, not the more exotic escargot. And there is also the Acappella restaurant in Church Hill on Broad Street. It is an Italian/German mix. I've taken my finance there every Valentines day for the past few years.

Good luck and have fun in Richmond!

As someone who has recently relocated to VA, I can tell you that Richmond is a great town...lots to see and do.

Plenty of museums to see, as well as nice areas to do some window shopping (Carytown).

For dinner, the Shockoe Bottom area of Richmond has quite a few nice restaurants, in variable price ranges.

Also, try richmond.citysearch.com - that should be helpful to you.

Enjoy your trip...

The one thing I would do if I went would be to go to the Virginia Museum - it's like Virginia's Smithsonian. Very interesting, especially if you're into history. Can't recommend a restaurant, though -
