The probable advantage of having an operon is the tight linkage of control of the gene to the production part of the gene which can allow fine control of the gene. Another advantage is that the gene and its control mechanism can be inherited as a unit.

1). has a single promotor region, so an RNA polymerase will transcribe all structural genes on an all-or-none basis.

2). contains a single operator, a DNA segment between the operon's promotor and structural genes. It is a binding site for the operon's repressor protein. Acts as the on /off switch for movement of RNA polymerase and transcription of the structural genes.
