The probable advantage of having a cluster of genes in an operon is the linkage of the control of the gene cluster to the cluster itself allowing tighter control of the production of related genes. Another advantage is that the genes and their control mechanism can be inherited as a unit so that, for instance, descendants can inherit an entire pathway and don't have to re-create a pathway themselves.
