When first the industry was sharp enough to build tall buildings, they immediately jumped from 5 to 10 to 20 stories. With elevators they did well filling the floors with lessees, but after a few years somebody did study on the leasing of buildings. It was found that the 13th floor stayed on lease nearly 50% less than the other floors in the buildings.

Whatever, the reason for the short fall, real estate businesses quickly began to disappear thirteenth floors.

It is silly, but not stupid. Most buildings that large are business oriented. Business desires to statisfy the customer (so that in turn the stock holders/owners are satified). If the customers think the 13th floor is bad luck, then getting rid of the 13th floor is good business.

The most stupid is those who believe that the 13th floor called the 14th isn't really the 13th. That to me is 1 of life's greatest mysteries.Am I the only 1 who thinks that's stupid?

A lot of people in this world are superstitious and a number of people will not go onto that 13th floor.

it is, on one hand -- the #13 does'nt mean anything bad; however, people are superstitious, 'stupid' or not, and they will use that as an excuse for things that just happen cuz they happen. for instance, the testing center where i work has no #13 testing computer, cuz someone taking a test, say a nurse's licensing exam, sitting at #13 and doesn't pass could turn around and ask for a free retest cuz they had to sit at desk #13 and it was bad luck for them.

remember that woman who sued mcdonald's for their coffee burning her when she was the stupid one who was holding it in her lap while driving and trying to put in the cream/sugar? goes to show to what levels people will stoop.

It depends on the person that is building the building, If that certain person is superstitious or not.. That does not make it stupid, to all each its own!!!

Short answer, yes.

Long answer, no.

Short answer: Yes, because it's a silly superstition.

Long answer: No, because even if it is for superstitios reasons, which it usually isn't, it attracts a surprising ammount of customers. A guy had to stay in room 666 and got it for free, because he was scared, so No, its not stupid, because it makes them hundreds of extra dollars
