The short answer is: Yes.
For the long answer, it depends on how high def you want to go.
HD movies come in two formats 720 line and 1080 line. Both are a 16:9 aspect ratio, so the final resolutions are:
1280 by 720. And 1920 by 1080.
Many laptop screens have a higher resolution than 1280 by 720 and so are capable of displaying HD movies in the lower format.
Not many screens support a resolution of 1920 by 1080 or greater, so any player that supports 1080 will have to downscale the image to match the screen resolution.
But then do you need to be able to count Mat Damon's eyebrow hairs to enjoy The Borne Ultimatum?

Look at the specifications. For 720p movies you need a laptop with 1280x800 resolution which ANY WIDESCREEN laptop these days have this kind of resolution. For 1080p you need a laptop with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 which only high-end gaming laptop has that. A 1680 x 1050 laptop won't show the full glory of 1080p but it is close.

2 iPhone 4's would be clearer than your 36" television while watching an entire HD video from iTunes. For a 15" exhibit 1366x768 continues to be a competent determination however, considering the fact which you're actually not likely to be staring at it very p.c. up, likewise with your television (yet your television is obviously previous and these days I doubt there are any 36" television's that are actually not HD). human beings probable ***** because of the fact now issues like the iPhone 4 are around yet laptops nevertheless have comparably undesirable determination. it is not a competent res IMHO as you could not truly multitask/interest on it... yet in a pc that small you're probable not likely to have the hardware to multitask/interest on it. additionally, the iPhone 4 is 960x640, so 2 would be 1920x1280. 1920x1080 is actual the determination for finished HD video. So think of approximately that, any sixteen:9 finished HD television actual has 384,000 much less pixels than 2 iPhones. So on a 15" exhibit, you somewhat ought to get a lots greater res and its lots nicer to have a intense res exhibit particularly for laptops.
