I currently work at McDonalds and today made my 5th or 6th day working. I was at the front counter today taking order's and toward the end of my shift, I'm responsible for restocking the counter so that the next shift would have enough condiments and what not. So as I was doing this, my manager was on my register taking an order. The 2 customers (a man and woman) ordered a meal that included a drink and 2 snack wraps that doesn't include a drink (which they wrongly assumed;especially the man). So I come back from the stock room and he asks me for his "2" medium cups, but his reciept only said he purchased 1 medium drink. I didn't take the order, so I assumed my manager didn't put in their second drink. I asked, "Did you order a second drink with your meal?" Then he asks, "The big question here is, why do you give a damn?" I ignored the uncalled for comment and tried to explain that the drink that was ordered was in his hand which came with the meal...

***Continuation*** So I said, "You only have one drink sir which is in your hand, there was only one drink with this order." Then he said, "Get your manager out here because I don't have time to argue with your a**!" So, I went to my manager and she explained to him the same thing I was explaining to him all the while. She told him, "Your 2 cheeseburger meal came with a drink which is in your hand, and her 2 snack wraps did not come with a drink. I repeated the order to you when I was done." He was quite speechless as she explained to him what I was explaining to him the whole while. So she went in the register and gave him a free drink and quickly said, "Thank you, and have a nice day...next customer please!" WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE!! DID I DO THE RIGHT THING???

Yes you did. You were polite. You explained what happened and then you went for help. Your manager backed you up and said the same things.

The difference is that your manager also did the right thing which was she made an indelicate situation disappear by complementing the customer with a free drink. She is the manager and she has the authority to do that.

If you had done that you could have been called on the carpet for exceeding your authority.

Both you and the manager handled the situation correctly.

Keep up the good work

Yes. No matter if the customer was being rude or wrong (probably because he was an idiot and doesn't understand simple logic) You did the right thing. You explained it to him and then your manager explained it to him. He's obviously a moron and was looking for a reason to argue or get a free drink. I don't blame your manager for giving him a free drink to shut him up. It's senseless to make a big deal over 5 cents worth of soda. Jerks like this are an everyday occurrence in any business trying to get free anything, and like the old adage says; "The customer is always right." Kill them with kindness" is what I was taught. Greedy idiots like this will get theirs one day and Karma's a *****....Good job,,,,,keep up the good work.

Well, this ALWAYS happens at work, no matter where it is. The customer wrongly expects something, you explain the situation and are correct, they go to the manager who gives them what they want. (even though they are wrong)

I would just follow up with the manager and say "In the future, how do you want me to handle another situation like that?" I don't think they'll want you handing out free food every time the customer asks for it. They'll probably tell you to get them.

I've been in your situation. You stand your ground with a customer and it feels like the manager doesn't back you up. It sucks, but it happens all the time. The customer is always right and all of that other BS.

You did fine, and your manager did the right thing just giving the guy a free drink that he didn't deserve, to defuse the situation and get him away from the counter. Don't worry about it. If you are going to deal with the public, most will be nice, some will be jerks. If you only get one jerk a week, you are probably lucky.

Dealing with the public is always going to be a hassle, especially if you're not a "people" person. I think you did right by calling the manager. He was speechless, but never apologized when he was wrong because he's was embarrassed. Remember: People will be people. I've never been rude to others, but sometimes been rude to. It just goes to show that everyone has a different look on life. You'll get over it and used to it. He won't be your last "rude" customer. Trust me!!!
