Steamer and if you can do a prof. do it. Truck mounted equipment works much better at stain removal and water extraction. I have found that common shampooers leave about 1/3 water in the carpet - that's gross and causes that mildew odor.

Home shampoo machines can take care of everyday traffic and help with some stain issues but only a pro can really take care of tough stains. I have a home steam machine and use it routinely but haven't found it to be great for the big stain jobs so I still hire a pro to come in routinely for that. I know there are plenty of home remedy ideas but nothing really works well so bite the bullet and hire the pro. Your carpet like any floor covering is an investment so you want to take care of it to the best of your ability.

I have had the best results with Chem Dry professional cleaners. Our friends who own a carpet store suggested them and said you should never use soap on carpet as it leaves a residue that collects dirt.
