The glowing is a phenomenon called chemiluminescence.

It is produced when a certain type of molecule reacts in the presence of a certain enzyme, and electrons are bumped into an excited (high-energy) state. The electrons drop back down to a lower energy level, giving up their energy in the form of photons of light. These photons are what you see.

Fireflies use a chemical called luciferin, and an enzyme called luciferase. They use the light to find each other when mating.
