Both australian hospitals I delivered in didn't have nurseries for baby. You roomed in with your child and took care of all its needs and then if for some reason you needed to leave (shower, cafeteria, use the phone) you just let them know and they will keep the baby at the desk or check on it in your room. They are always there if you need help with baby though and if you are really lucky to be in a small hospital as I was with my first, a nurse might take the baby for a couple of hours during the night. My midwife would take the baby inbetween 4 hourly feeds everynight for 3nights but not so lucky with 2nd! I went home the next day with him as I could do the same at home as I did in the hospital.

I don't know of any hospitals in australia that have nurserys anymore except maybe small country ones and even then you are probably encourage to room-in anyway. Its better that way, I couldn't stand not having my baby with me as much as I could.

Good luck

Our urban hospitals all still have nurseries. Most of the outlying community hospitals do not.

There are many occasions when a new mom might want the baby in the nursery at night, especially if there are no family members spending the night. I had a spinal headache and was required to stay flat for 12 hours. No way to take care of a baby with that requirement. Some moms are too exhausted and just want to sleep at night, while others may be ill or on heavy medication. Higher risk moms are typically referred to urban hospitals.

I don't work in labor and delivery but my daughter was born 6 (almost 7) weeks ago and there was a nursery. To my knowledge there still is nurseries in hospitals. I had her rooming in with me most of the time but she was in the nursery from time to time so I could get a little shut eye.

I dont work in a hospital but I delivered last year and they had a nursery area. I have never heard of a hospital not having one.

I don't work in a hospital but I know that the hospital I delivered in did not have one, if you absolutely had to leave your baby with the nurses for some reason (which was strongly discouraged) they kept the baby at the desk.

Of course there are nurseries for special needs infants.

As far as I know all of the hospitals in the city (Toronto, Ontario) are the same.

When I had my daughter a year ago we kept her in our room. At one point, the nurse convinced us to turn her over to the nursery for 2 hours to get some sleep. Hubby walked down the hall with the nurse and our daughter and came back shortly after...with the nurse and our daughter. "They dont let parents in the nursery" He grumbled, half asleep before slumping in a chair, only to stand up again to check on our daughter.
I dont remember the reason, but I suspect to encourage rooming-in. Needless to say, we called my mother to watch the baby while we slept.

Neither of the hospitals I've delivered in (UK and Caribbean) have had nurseries.

They are trying to encourage moms and babies to room-in together. I loved having my baby next to me all the time.

If they had to take the baby for some reason, they would keep it at the nurse's station which I wasn't a fan of.

I think nurseries are being phased out in some areas.

The hospital I delivered at 10 days ago has one... but they do encourage "rooming in" with your baby rather than having him/her in the nursery.

Most hospitals do- but they are encouraging rooming in. I had our baby last year- and there was a nursery- they do check-ups there and first shots as well as first baths there.
