When you opened the account, you would have received a paper Certificate of Deposit.

You sholuld know that when you open the account. What ever paper work you did then should lay out the type of account it is. Also, if all you get from the bank are notices when interest is paid and when the CD is up for renewal, that would tell you. If you are still unsure, call the bank and ask what type of account it is.

If you don't know, there is at least a 99% chance you don't. CDs don't open themselves, You have to open them.

i would assume you'd know because you put money into it in the first place.
