Social anxiety is real and sometimes therapy can help and other times medication helps. I think maybe if you just started having this problem then maybe you could stop it yourself by thinking of other things when around people. I have a friend who likes to vision water falls when she starts to get nervous because waterfalls are calming to her. What ever the case may be do not let this go on for so long that you do end up on medication. Seek help.

Relax. Listen. Smile. Don't feel like you have to say anything and speak only when you have something nice to say. You can't go wrong.
If you still have problems, see a therapist. There are medications to help social anxiety, but I think it is better to learn strategies to manage the anxiety. Feeling anxiety is natural, but we can learn to go through with it anyway and with practice we find there is no reason to be anxious. What is the worse that can happen.
Another option is go to www.anxietycoach.com. You may find some answers there.

I have the same problem. I think you just need to change your outlook on things. you know, start telling yourself not to be intimidated by others, because no one's better than anybody else. i don't know if you're the same, but i get really nervous and feel like everyone's watching me and judging how weird and stupid i am. but in all honesty, either no one cares what you're doing or they feel the same way about themselves. so don't ever be afraid to try new things and say what you feel because you're no less a human than anyone else.=) good luck.

Rather than thinking about being around your peers, think about the possibilities and outcomes of what will happen afterward, and think of what to say and focus on communication and not on your emotion and how you feel, it will be noticeable afterward. Likewise, they'd notice what you're not noticing and what you'd notice afterward.
