Through the presence or absence of vertebral column
By seeing the position of nerve cord: if it is above the gut it is vertebrate and if it is below the gut it is an invertebrate.

Whether they have a backbone or not. Vertebrates do. Invertebrates don't.

What do you have available to you? Can you touch it, do X-rays, see it, etc?

If it's a vertebrate, it should have a hard (bony!) structure running from the head/area of encephalization to the pelvic area. Look for a backbone. . .
