No,in fact that's my favorite expression. It's completely noncomittal. Why not try using it and see if you don't like it? It's the ideal good-for-all-occassions things to say. So are you going to go ballistic on me?

When someone says "whatever" it conveys lack of interest. If some one is not interested, there are less rude ways of saying so.
