A win or a loss is half a game. So if a team has played one more game more than another team, they can be a half game ahead.

You haven't played as many games as the first place team. When the first place team wins and you lose you drop back 1 game, and vice versa if the first place team loses and you win you gain 1 game on them, so if you have played one game less then the first place team the first place team has put up their stat as a win for the game, but you haven't played that game yet so no one knows if it is a win or loss therefore only half of the record has been played so you are half a game back.

The schedules allow for different teams to have played a different total number of games on a particular day, leading to 1/2 game standing. Add to that rain outs or other delayed games that aren't added to the total games played and are made up later in the schedule.
In the end, it all evens out (for the most part, but that is a different question).

Because one team might have played more games. For instance if one team is 5-2, and other is 4-2, you would subtract 5 from 4, and then divide by 2, and you would get 1/2.

each game is worth one half.
that is how baseball does this computation.
if all teams in one div, for example, play all 162 games the subsequent teams are out of fist by a whole digit.
wait till sept. and see it.
