I am not a fan but according to a documentary I saw, it was instrumental in the invention of the mobile phone. The inventor of the cell phone said he was a fan and was inspired by star trek and their wee flippy communicator thingies. That's all I remember I'm afraid.

When I think of the imagination that lead to inventions from the Star Trek era- my first thought is their communicator reminds me of the flip phones we have now a days.
Plus think of some of their early episodes that lead to some early technical special effects. They got more creative with the makeup of their alians. They no longer were the typical martian looking thing we see in alot of the earlier shows.
It seemed like after Star Teck was on the air and they were talking about intercoms we heard more about them being used in the homes.
Star Trek did invent a whole new era of followers that you still see today. How many shows that aired about the same time as star trek still have all the followers and big time star trek conventions like this show seem to spark?
I will say that indicating someone is dumb just because they might not agree with your question is not cool. It just means they have a different way of thinking. They just dont think outside the box (whis is a saying my mom use to say all the time when she wanted us to use our imaginations.)

Disposable security officers.
Its not the cell phone 'cos the communicatror is just a small walkie talkie, and they were around 20 years before that.
If it were a phone, Kirk would ring up Starfleet demanding less stroppy crew and more fit yeomen.
Shuttlecraft perhaps.
3D chess ? That probably existed before anyway.
Temperature controlled suits. The T shirts and slacks were all capable of sustaining them in hjot or cold climates but they hardly ever mentioned that.
Ion drive was mentioned, not that Starfleet had the kit to do it. We're just starting to do this now, but it was probably known beforeST.
Universal translator. Show me one ?
Its not GPS cos several radio based navigation systems existed many years before, eg Decca.

"Star Trek" didn't invent anything, you stupid people! It's a TV show! It may have been the inspiration that led to other people inventing things, but that's not the same thing at all!

Vocera hands-free communicators that you wear around the neck...soon they will be the size of the ones in Star Trek and worn as name badges.

There's no SOLID evidence that Star Trek helped invent anything. There is circumstantial evidence, however, that Star Trek influenced the creation of: the cellphone, GPS, remote monitoring of patient's vital statistics, CAT scan/MRI, and PDAs.

Cell phones are actually another type of walkie-talkie. They're basically two-way radios.

1) the fact you can call kids with pointy ears spock
2) Star trek uniforms helped invent new designs and ranges of gimp uniform
3) loads of crappy spin off-shows shown all the time on sky
