Hi Parjkerd,

The Betaxax was the first VCR sold for home use. It was followed shortly by the VHS (Video Home System) by JVC. The beta actually had a better picture but the VHS recorded longer and finally took the market. Sony tried 8MM next and finally caved in and paid a license fee to manufacture the VHS system.
