no a machine that used a steel band like a band saw was the first vcr it weighed several tons and was called VERA visual elecronic recording aparatus. here is the link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VERA_videotape_format

Hi Parjkerd,

The Betaxax was the first VCR sold for home use. It was followed shortly by the VHS (Video Home System) by JVC. The beta actually had a better picture but the VHS recorded longer and finally took the market. Sony tried 8MM next and finally caved in and paid a license fee to manufacture the VHS system.
