The secret to great acting is NOT acting. You have to REALLY feel whatever emotion you are trying to portray. Think of things that have made you cry in the past. Use these memories as your motivation and really FEEL those emotions again as if the event was happening again. It will take some practice, but eventually you will be able to manipulate your own emotions to be whatever you want them to be on stage.

Always remember however, Don't act. BE.

You don't force. You have to think about something sad that happened in your life and you will cry. You can also do this. Lets say your character has lost their parents a friend a pet or anything that is important to them. Then put yourself in that situation, what will you do if you were to loose something that you really loved and cared about? Then you will feel it in your heart and shed tears. You have to feel the real thing in order to make it look natural, not like oh, cut some onions and it will look like your crying that's not acting! You gotta become the character and feel it!

You can't force yourself to cry. The best way that it happens, is when you're really in the moment and are really feeling what the character is feeling and tears come naturally. There is nothing worse than fake crying, unless it's for comedic effect, then just let 'er rip.
Don't worry about being able to produce tears, that's not what will get you the part. Just be in the moment, feel the sadness of the character, that feeling should manifest itself in your expression and body movements. If you tear up, great, if you don't, it's ok. The emotion will be shown anyways by your acting.

Pretend you are crying. Put your hand up to your eyes as though you are wiping away the tears, with a small amount of onion juice on your finger tips. You'll knock 'em dead with your crying, real tears and red swollen eyes from crying. It really works. I did this for a high school play audition. And, got the part :) Good luck dear friend.

I doubt if you actually have to be able to cry in the audition.
But I used to wear hard contact lens. If I squeezed my eye a little, I could get tears easily.
But seriously, unless the script is saying something like--My goodness, look at all those tears coming out of your eyes!--
you generally don't have to cry real tears.

work urself up first -
just think of like animal cruelty or something - theres a video on youtube about the illegal chinese fur trade - its VERY sad..i had to stop it halfway through bc i was so upset and i almost cried.
now if you arent very sensitive there are many ways you can physically make urself cry
1. eye drops
2. smell a freshly cut onion through ur nose and bring it near ur eye - u shudnt really put the actual onion juice in ur eye though, bc it stings like ****.
3. put a little bit of soap in the corner of ur eye (the corner closest to the middle of ur face) and ur eyes should water up
and if none of those help,
4. pluck some of your nosehairs.
oh.
my.
god.
i GUARUNTEE u will cry if u pluck a nosehair.
neways - good luck!! break a leg and remember - confidence is key.

Skip all the dumb answers. If you are acting properly, doing what an actor is supposed to do and that is react to the stimuli the way the character reacts to it because as one of the other answerers said you are being the character, you will cry when the character cries. It is that simple and it doesn't need to be forced, it just needs to be the proper reaction to the stimuli of the scene.

I find not blinking helps!

But work yourself up, when ever i need to cry ( i dont act or anything, sometimes i just feel like a clensing cry for the sake of it!) BUT i think of the WORST possible thing ever, you have to be detailed, like imagine that you just got a phone call that someone died, or your dog got ran over by a car etc,

Instead of the word force, I would say bring forth sadness that causes you to cry. You might try thinking of the death of a close loved one. If you haven't experienced that, think of something that makes you sad. What is the saddest you've ever been in your life?

Open your eyes. Don't blink. Look at a really bright light = crying.

Works every time.

Thinking of the saddest thing possible DOES NOT do anything.
