My baby is 3 weeks old. She really is a joy and is a good girl really, but over the last few days, she just cant settle in the late afternoon/early evening time, she can be awake for 4/5 hours. I shouldnt complain really as Im pretty sure it isnt colic as she doesnt really cry as such, she just fusses and just wont sleep even though I know shes tired! I rock her, walk her, bathe her, massage her, burp her. She nods off but then is up again 5 minutes later.
Did anyone else go through this and have any suggestions? and how long will this fussy phase last?
Thanks

My 3 and a half week old usually has a fussy time from anywhere between 4pm to 10 pm usually lasting about an hour. Sleeps for 20 minutes, eats an ounce, wants to be held, sometimes is even awake for a couple hours in the evening. My readings say this is called cluster feeding where they don't settle and want to eat every 20 minutes or so, has something to do with when they are in the womb that is the time period we normally eat our big meal at, baby was used to the rush of nutrients so now that they are out of the womb they want to eat and be alert during that time. They say it's just a phase and as long as you respond to their wants/needs they grow out of it quickly. We just try to make sure one of us has the time to hold him and play with him during these few hours.

my son was really never fussy at all. once in a while he'd have a cry spell that would last 20 minutes at some times but that was very rare for him. i myself am lucky, many parents have babies that cry for hours all the time. every baby is different so it's hard to say how long her fussy phase will last...it could be a couple weeks or her whole life! just be patient and loving and she'll feel that you are there to comfort her and that's the best thing you can do.

In my experience, she should not be up that long and that is why she is fussy. Try to put her down for an afternoon nap. Even if she doesn't seem tired, just slow playing down. Read a book so her (even though she is young), rock her and lay her down with her and make is quiet and peaceful and have her sleep for 2 hours. It works with my 4 month old. I garentee she won't fuss as much. Make sure her nap ends about 2 or even 3 hours before bedtime. Goodluck!

Maybe it's a combination of things... like the last comment, maybe she needs more sleep... (I suggest "On Becoming Baby Wise"... this has lots of good advice!)... my baby was like this every night starting at 7pm. She would just cry for 2-4 hrs straight! My doc didn't think it was colic, but one night I got so frustrated that I finally took her to instacare... the doc there said she had thrush, but my normal doc said that probably wasn't the reason for her fussiness, but probably added to it. But my suggestion is to just make sure she doesn't have thrush, because this doesn't help!!! (her mouth will look white like there's milk coated on her cheeks and tongue, if she did have it you can get a Rx from your doctor that will clear it up in a day or so.) Hope you figure it out, or good luck for the next little while just waiting it out!

All babies have their fussy time. For my oldest it was around 6 pm each night. It can last a few hours. No fun. But, it is a phase and will go away in time. For my son, it was over in just a few months.

It's called "hyperawake" and it usually occurs just before baby is ready to sleep. My son is 3 months old and still does this. He's perfectly fine all day then he gets fussy, throws his arms and legs around wildly for a couple of hours, now I know when he does this he's getting ready to fall asleep for the night.

i use to wrok in a daycare and i would sugguest a nice bath a bottle and some smoothing music liek baby music . u can find it in the baby ilse in a walmart ,target or an ablum store. my best advice is the music u can try it maybe that would sooth her. she ca also still be hungry so make sure she drinlks her milk, but don't make her. i think u will find the music alot helpful. hope it works.

Gassy and colicky babies get fussier in the evening and night times. I had the same issue and Babies magic tea helped with his fussiness.

I called this witching hour with my daughter. She started at about 4pm and would be fussy for several hours. I guess it's pretty normal.
