A pencil could symbolize growing up. When you start out you haven't done anything (or in the pencil's case, written anything) but as time grows on so do your accomplishments and mistakes.

Many years ago, I recall seeing a newspaper advertisement showing a young boy, his hands on a table as he looked intently at four particular objects evenly spaced in front of him: a pencil, key, ballot, and Bible. The pencil symbolizes work and ambition. Of course, today the com-puter has superseded the pencil. Nevertheless, the two are the same in essence, even if technically different. Success in any age is impossible without the ability to write. We can't communicate without words to translate our thoughts, and pencils, in whatever form, are the tools of the trade.

Fortunately, pencils are equipped with erasers. No one is perfect. Mistakes happen. However, in all our fumbling, we can be thankful that there is a purpose to our striving and that ideas, though written on paper, translate into real-life deeds and achievements. i think that a pencil could symbolize knowledge or freedom because using a pencil you can write whatever you want and express your feelings how you want to.

I was thinking more along the lines of "the pen is mightier than the sword" meaning that written words can destroy a person's life worse than a sword.

a pencil can symbolize getting to use notes on a quiz, cause you had a pencil to take notes!! i've went to school with no pecil.....YOU NEED A PENCIL!!! i lost real good notes!!
