It's better than nothing, but not as good as factory galvanizing. Best bet to to spray galvanize, then spray Rustoleum primer, then Some Rustoleum...Allow each coat to dry before the next... no need to sand, but the first layer should go on a clean, dry surface. If you see a rust spot, then hit it with a quick shot of each can in order. My trailer's last 10 years or more with this routine.

IF the rust is superficial, then use that wire brush and some sandpaper to get it down to the metal. Then use a good metal primer on the entire trailer. Go right over the paint that is already there. Give it two days to really dry well. Then use an EPOXY-based paint. Or, if you can find the facility that does it, go to a powder application epoxy facility, and get it powder-coated with epoxy. But in either case, use an epoxy based paint. Allow a week for complete setup of the paint, and you will have a trailer that will never rust again!! Enjoy!!

If you scrape down to the bare metal on the trailer and if the spray "galvanize" has zinc in it, yes, it will help keep the rust away.

But if you just spray it on over the paint, grease, salt, mineral deposits and rust, it will be of little value.

Next time buy a boat trailer made of aluminum. It does not rust.

if used in saltwater, use only a trailer that is factory galvanized or aluminum. the salt will rust the wheels and axle in places you cant maintain. you risk a broken axle and a wreck.

what you do is grind or sand the rust off as much as one can then paint it whit any kind of paint it will last a while and it looks better than rust any day.... nothing will last like the first one the factory did just clean it and spray it
