That's a good question, and the answer is that no one knows for sure. Although some people think it is caused by tornadoes or hail, Craig Bohren, one of top scientists in the field of atmospheric optics, believes that neither one is the cause. It probably has something to do with the high liquid water content of severe storms combined with the reddening of the late afternoon sun.

It is a sign of a tornado. When the sky turns green the atmosphere and storm system are strong enough to possibly produce a tornado.

It is because there is hail in the storm clouds. The sunlight shining through the hail shows it as green. The best thing to do in this situation is remain inside away from windows.

Color is just a reflection of light, moisture in the air will change that reflection.
