ok my son has to make a model of the grand canyon. I have some ideas like Paper Mache, or modeling clay. I just need some help on the execution of it. Anyone have any ideas????????

Modeling clay is going to be much neater than paper mache. I had to assist with a state map last year so I feel your pain. We didnt have very high mountains to do so we just did clay bumps for them.
But the Grand Canyon, hmmm need to pull out the stops for this one. If you're using clay I assume that this won't be really big. What I would do is get some cardboard and cut the canyon out of it using layers. The bottom layer could hold the river and then each layer after that could build up the sides and peaks. You could cover the whole thing in modelng clay. Hobby Lobby had a large selection of different color sticks of clay that you should be able to replicate about any color. They were pretty cheap too. Have him start with a box. That will be the walls and floor of the canyon. He can build out the walls with papier mache and paint on the different colors of rock. Then he can use crepe paper to make the river. If he wets his crepe paper with the glue and water mixture, he can form the rapids and what not. Make sure HE does it, not you!

definitely use clay if you can its really fun to shape it and easier then paper mache (no clue how to spell that) and the whats its dry you just paint it the appropriate colors
