example

page 1 has a bottom left number of 1 and without changing anything the next page has 2 instead of 1 so the numbers essentially print in number

Yeah, just add it to the header or footer.

For Excel, go to:

File > Page Setup...

Then click the Header/Footer tab.

Click which section you want to put it in (Custom Header or Custom Footer).

To add the page, click the button that looks like the pound sign. And it will insert the page number tag &[Page]. If you click the button that looks like two + signs, it will add the tag for total number of pages &[Pages]. So if I had something that was 6 pages long and on page three I wanted it to read on the print out:

Order #: 150469, Page 3 of 6

In the footer section, when you were done entering stuff it would look like;

Order #: 150469, Page &[Page] of &[Pages]

Think of typing it as &[Page] is the same thing as the 3. And &[Pages] is the same thing as the 6. You put a space before and after the tags just like you would a number.

Microsoft work has the exact same set up almost, but you don't get to the header and footer through the page setup. You go to:

View > Header and Footer

In Word it will then surround the headers and footers with a dashed line. Put your cursor in the header or footer. Use the tab button to move across from left to middle to right. The two buttons for the page numbers are exactly the same as in Excel. Just in Word they show up on the Header and Footer toolbar.

Use the footer option. It has a choice to insert page numbers. They will automatically number.
