There are growth inhibitors on the market for professional groundskeepers. Most states you'll need a special license to buy and apply........and then the grass often burns with the product.
Mowing is the least time consuming and with all the machines now available, the least physical of garden chores. Perhaps your lawn needs to be redesigned to eliminate obstructions like shrubs within the lawn, tight corners that require backing up over and over.
Removing the lawn and putting in groundcovers means weeding by hand inbetween the plants. Removing the lawn and putting down gravel means having to blow leaves and trash off the rocks, sweep the rocks back off the walks and eventually tear it all out and redo because dust blew in and allowed weeds to grow on top of the rock.
If you hate lawns, get a condo or hire someone.

I started with my back yard first. I took all the "shady" areas and had nothing but healthy moss which took up most of the yard. It is soft on your feet if you have a sitting bench etc... out there. The front lawn I sectioned off for flower beds, evergreens, water features etc... the amount of mowable grass has been reduced. Make a sketch of your front and back yards first and see what you prefer for living space.
