If your periods have become irregular since stopping birth control, and especially if they continue to be for three years afterwards, I would definately speak to a doctor about the situation.
I know that I was listed as 'infertile', but took birth control anyways to help with an irregular period and cysts that had developed on my ovaries. Almost eighteen months to the day after I stopped taking birth control, I became pregnant.
In some, birth control hinders nothing (such as my case, where I believe it helped). In others, it can cause long lasting changes that might require medication to help.
Definately see your doctor and explain the situation.

I was on the pill for 7 years, went off it for 3 months before trying then got pregnant the first month I tried. My doctor told me that nowadays the pill really shouldn't affect your chances of conceiving and that within 12 months 90% of women conceive after going off the pill. If not, there may be something else going on and both the man and woman should be checked out.

I'm not sure about the particulars, but from my experience, the best way to conceive is to stop trying.
When my wife stopped BC, she was ready to go...tried for quite a while...stressed over it. No luck. Then she just gave up trying. We decided to just do what we do, and when it happened, it would happen. And so it did, less than 3 months later.
My take on it is that when you're stressing about trying to get pregnant, your body notes that stress and is less likely to bring a child into that stressful environment.

Two of my cousins who were on birth control had similar problems. One tried for about 6 years to conceive until succeeding. The other has yet to concieve. She's still trying. I truly believe birth control will mess you up.
