This is a purified form of the element Sulfur. It can be used for various things, including as a topical medication for certain skin disorders, to dust on crops to ward off insects, to mix into soil to correct alkalinity, and to make gunpowder, matches, fireworks, etc. among other things. Why do you ask?

As a student Nurse in 1950s --1960s we used it to mix with something to test urine for ?? the presence of ?bile. This was of course prior to the availability of reagent strips which have been in common use for many years.

if my memory serves me correctly its used somehow to clean up mercury spills . or to neutralise the harmful vapours .
