If you want to make it as an actress, don't allow any barriers to get in your way. Numerically speaking, there are so few Indians in the population. So, there will be less auditioning and therefore less on the screen. However, you will not know until you audition if you will make it or not.

In acting, visual aspects matter. I went to an audition once, and I looked at the script, and I didn't qualify for any of the roles because they all called for one race that I was not part of. Did racism happen to me? No, it was just part of the story, and casting someone of my race would interfere with the telling of the story.

If you really want to be an actress, then pursue it. Directors pick the best talent, who fit the script's needs, and oftentimes, if there is any discrimination, it is the kind of discrimination in which good talent gets passed up because someone of lesser talent gets picked because they know the director and are good friends with that person.

Casting depends a lot on what the director has in mind for the play she or he is directing. If her concept for the play advocates a diversity or centers around racial diversity, then she will more than likely cast people from multiple backgrounds. If an actor seems quite suitable for a role, then that actor ideally, should be cast. Unfortunately, depending on the theatre and circumstance, i.e. the producer's son wanting a role as a fledgling actor, then sometimes other people can be "shoo-ins" to a role. I would encourage you to simply do your best, and to see what comes of it. Given the prevalence of Indians on television and the opening to racial diversity of television (look at Lost, or 4400, or even Heroes and you'll see what I mean), I think you will notice a trend moving toward non-type casting and more towards talent.

I think they tend to pick what is familiar to them or 'safe'

They don't pick too many other ethnicities because they are afraid an ethnic lead won't sell their movie. It's all about the bottom line and that's unfortunate but that's reality.

my two cents

I think it's because whites are the majority in the USA, followed by blacks, so you will have more white and black actors than indians, asians, and so forth.
