I am in Theatre Production class in high school. We are going to produce a play soon, and the play involves a pool. But the school board will not allow us to use real water in the pool. What are some other cool ideas/ways we can portray water?

You could also go the more expressionist route, and use a scrim or muslin fabric as a flat, while with a pan of water, casting a light into the water that will reflect back onto the muslin or scrim--this is a water effect that has been used since time immemorial, and any good light book could explain how to do it--I believe it is done with a simple mirror in the water to reflect the waves on the surface, and it is projected by the mirror onto the flat. A "gobo" or a "go-between" could also be used on your lights to give you a water effect cast onto the floor of the stage, if you've got the kinds of lights that can use them.

Blue fabric with stage hands on either side of the stage holding the fabric. You can have it move or not meaning they can make it 'wave' This can be done with paper, but the paper may tear.

It can be done with wood, but this would then be a large set piece that can be cumbersome to deal with.

The other way would be a half or quarter drop that is open on top. Obviously blue on the bottom and it would look like water (paint effects?)

good lucK!

I recently saw a production that had those round blow up kiddie pools and filled them about halfway with long blue streamers (the kind you would hang up for a party). You could mix light blue and dark blue. It looked really good when the actors were "splashing" around in them!

In one of our plays we used a silky blue sheet it was cool but not very life like u can always use cardboard cut in to wave shapes and paint them blue and the acter/actresses can stand between them but make them tall so u can only see like the chest up!!
