I never said I hate gay people. I just don't agree with it, where did our freedom of speech go?

There's nothing wrong with freedom of speech, but the Republicans have actually been trying to amend the Constitution to outlaw gay marriage. Do you have any idea what a horrific precedent that would set? First of all, the Constitution was written to protect our rights, not to take them away. We have laws to tell us what not to do. The Constitution sets limits to prevent those laws from taking away our freedoms. Worse yet, this would be the first amendment ever to explicitly discriminate against a minority. That's a slippery slope we should never even think about starting down, because it could only lead to disaster. This country was founded on equal rights, and if we fall into the "some are more equal than other" trap, as in George Orwell's Animal Farm, we could soon find ourselves in a nightmare of government-imposed class structures and tyranny. Read Orwell's "Animal Farm" and "1984" and ask yourself if that's the way you want to live.

I'm appalled at the number of bigots here. I'm straight, by the way - straighter than your average Republican politician - and I'm shocked at your lack of humanity. Would you be equally in favor of reinstating slavery, or depriving women of their right to vote? If not, why do you approve of federally mandating discrimination against any group? We've spent 231 years fighting for equal rights for everyone, and you want to take a giant step backwards. How can the same party that claims to be against big government be in favor of this? This is the ultimate intrusion of the federal government into the most personal aspects of people's lives. Am I the only one who sees how wrong that is? What happened to "with liberty and justice for all"? When did it become "with liberty and justice for all except those we don't like"?

Something about politics always seems to bring out the very worst in people. I've seen discussions on this topic in other categories where sanity clearly prevailed, but in politics the radicals seem to out number the sane people. I hope that it's only because radicals are drawn to this category in disproportionately large numbers and it's not an indication of the general public's thinking.

I haven't seen anyone on this forum tell someone that they didn't have the right to disagree, or condone that our right to free speech should be abridged.

Having said that, I still think that you are a bigot. That is my humble opinion. Marriage is a thorny issue, because it is both a legal institution and a religious one. In spite of this, I think that anyone who would discriminate against a person over thier sexual preference is infringing on that person's freedom.

Enjoy your free speech. But don't discourage others from excersizing thier free speech, even if that includes an insult or two along the way.

Don't feel bad, your not alone.

Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama, Joe Biden, John Edwards are all against gay marriage also.

They all voiced that opinion at the Gay Debate Forum.

you're entitled to your own opinion just as much as I'm entitled to mine. I believe they should have every right a straight couple does, but again... that's my opinion. I'm proud that the state I work in supports it, and I hope that someday, the state I live in will as well.

Many people here don't agree with gay marriage- you're not alone.

whether or not you or myself don't hate gay people is illrelevant.

they dont' care about free speech, they are fascists at their core.

don't agree with their lefty agenda? you're a racist, a xenophobe, thisaphobe that aphobe etc....

nothing new for the joe goebels crowd.

notice their hypocrisy; the government SHOULD ENDORSE a lifestyle that most Americans dont' agree with.

but the government should NOT Endorse or even mention a religion or God which most Americans agree with.

Freedom of speech means you can't be arrested for expressing your opinion. It doesn't prevent people from telling you that they disagree with you.

You're allowed to disagree with it, of course, that's your choice; but you aren't allowed to silence the debate or dismiss the topic as universally unimportant simply because it isn't important to you. Be willing to listen and learn - you don't need to change your opinions, but if you stay open-minded you may learn something interesting.

Also, if you reject gay marriage on religious reasons, you need to recognize that it is a LEGAL debate, not a religious debate, so it's unfair to apply your religious beliefs to a question of civil liberties.

You have to find in yourself the integrity to stand by whatever you believe is right or wrong. You have the right to love, hate whatever you please. If someone else disagrees then it becomes their tough luck and then you must have it in you to deal with the fallout. You can either let it bother you or you can shrug them off and continue with your life.It only wears you down if you let it.

you've got me i seem to get attacked for being a "dirty liberal"

I like discussing politics but people tend to just spew hatred instead of having a civilized debate.

why we cant disagree and still be respectful is beyond me

and I agree with the other poster...its a civil liberty issue not a religious issue.

It is because you are not being politically correct. You see, the liberals think its grand and they, to include their Presidential candidates, wine and dine the gays side of the community.

If you don't agree with them, your a gay basher, a homophobe or a radical far right winger. Myself, being a conservative democrat, don't agree with that garbage and I think it is wrong no matter how you slice it.

Stand up for your values, don't let others drag you down to their level.
