I was talking to a friend and she said that it was so hot she felt like she was taking a sauna. And we got into an argument about the right terminology to use. So my question is: Would you say I took a sauna like you would with I took a shower?

Because a sauna and a shower aren't really the same type of noun. So could you still say you "took" or would you have to say something different. Like...I "experienced" a sauna or I "went to" a sauna.

How would you phrase it when talking to friends?

I'm not entirely certain terminology is important in similes or metaphors.

Usually, in that context, "felt like I was in a sauna". If I've actually been to a sauna, I'd say "I had a sauna earlier." because "sauna" *is* the activity as well as the name of the room - just like shower.

So "taking a sauna" doesn't seem objectionable. Mind, I'm happy using sauna as a verb as well as a noun - like shower, bath. Personally I don't say "I took a shower", it would be "I had a shower". I might say I "took a look at the guy as he came into the sauna" but otherwise I don't tend to use "took" at all.

It's still reasonably obvious what "taking" means in your friend's context - "having", not "removing from the premises". If there was ambiguity it would be wrong.

A sauna is a form of dry bathing, and so one could say "took a sauna bath", and dropping the word bath doesn't really make it all that different.

Frankly if a friend said she was so hot she felt like she was taking a sauna, I'd be suggesting that we go whip our clothes off and actually take a sauna rather than arguing over terminology. After a few minutes' relaxing heat (as opposed to heat when you don't want it) it would be clear that it's not really important.
