MS does not monopolize. You do not have to buy or use their products, there are options out there. Get Linux to run your system and choose a different word processor, spreadsheet, email, browser, etc.
Plenty of people do it and seem very happy.

Fact is, Microsoft came up with an operating system the world embraced and, without it, most computers would have issues. Of course, you could go with Apple, or Linux or something like that, but MS's OS is one of the best and you cant argue that.
Most people over 40 remember the AT and T break up, that caused all those Baby Bells, well, the government caused that and soon realized how much they messed up. As you can see know, AT and T is slowly gaining all the baby bells back up under one roof.
My thing is, if you don't like Microsoft, go buy an apple. and see how many applications you need that Apple don't have.

Monopolies aren't illegal in and of themselves.
Microsoft has the dominant market share, because no one else has developed a operating system to compete with them.
Linux, could compete, but since it is open source, no one has put together a feature rich package suitable for non technicial users.
It's like Nintendo was back in the early 1990's, when they controlled 90% of the console gaming market.
But as soon as Sony, came up with a competing console the Play Station, Nintendo started losing market share.
Now Microsoft has used it's dominate position in operating systems, to push internet explorer.
Most likely even illegally pushing internet explorer.
But it is still hard to show any harm to the consumer.
Since microsofts pushing of internet explorer, started the growth of the browsing market and increased the quality of all browsers and made browsers free to the public and not a program you had to purchase.
Most people foget that prior to IE , you had to pay for internet browsers, mainly Netscape.

Microsoft has made a superior product that has changed the world. Now other companies want to horn in on their hard work. As far as i'm concerned the government should stay out of it. If Microsoft's competitors want some of the market then they need to make a better product.

Microsoft doesnt have an monoply. Its just nobody has successfully launched suitable substitiutions or products that can compete with the stuff Microsoft produced. Sure, there is Linux, but not a lot of people know how to use it.

Because the government knows that over 90 percent of the home computers in the world have Microsoft Windows as an operating system.
The spy agencies know that if they ever needed information on citizens ,(hack their computers on a grand scale and or webcams) it would be more easily attained from hacking one operating system rather than 100's.
In conclusion, the rules were bent for national security reasons.
To further answer your question I would recommend that you watch a movie called "Nineteen Eighty Four". By George Orwell.

Capitalism and a free market. Fairly simple answer if you enjoy living in America. Try buying drugs from India. They have factories churning out impost er drugs that look identical to US produced. Try buying software without the US system, get some Microsoft from India at a reduced price or from China, See what happens when it doesn't work.
If you invented a drug that would end obesity forever in America would you want to keep the patent in your pocket and the billions of dollars or give it all away? Jeez

Microsoft is a private corporation. There is no government association other than use of its systems. Other companies who feel they're being swindled have to take Microsoft to fed court.

Microsoft isn't monopolizing anything. You don't have to buy their product. The problem(?) is that every business has windows based computers. They don't have to buy their product either.

It's not monopolizing. If someone better came along, I'm sure people would jump ship and leave Microsoft (hell, I know I would)
