The "remaining hostage to Iraq" is a good analogy.

According to Pentagon estimates, US troop levels are at near exhaustion stage -- we cannot sustain current levels in Iraq, and we certainly have no resources to meet any other threat anywhere else.

So, as long as we stay in Iraq at anywhere near current levels, we are unable to respond effectively to any other threat.

I read that article. This is the paragraph that struck me....

Even worse, an all-out civil war could compel a withdrawal of the U.S. troops, now numbering about 160,000, in three months' time, which would force leaving valuable equipment behind and preventing control of an orderly exodus, the report said.

There is no other way to describe our situation, we are captive to the situation we have created in Iraq. We need to develop a way out for our troops and our equipment as safely as possible for everyone. Let's not have another crazed departure like we did in Vietnam. We don't need to disgrace our troops for their efforts no matter what we think.
