About 4.5 billion years old.

Note that that doesn't mean there was no Creator. It just means they didn't do it 6000 years ago. If they exist, they started the whole thing with a Bang 13 billion years ago, and used a very elegant process. Quite grand.

If you're a person of faith who is troubled about that, check out this site:

Scientists have settled on the age of the earth of about 4.6 billion years as a result of research started almost 50 years ago. This conclusion was based upon carefully designed and conducted experiments that compared the ratios in rock samples of parent elements to daughter elements ( some of which would have been from radioactive decay of the parent, some of which may have been present in the sample at the time of formation).

On the other hand, basing one’s ideas on the Bible gives a very different picture. The Bible states that man was made six days after creation, about 6,000 years ago. So a time-line of the world constructed on biblical data would have man almost at the beginning, not the end.

Anon - not ALL Christians believe that the earth is 6000 years old. I am a Christian and I definitely do NOT accept that as either good science or a good biblical interpretation.
