I wouldn't say we are close to an economic collapse but when the Feds are printing dollars like there's no tomorrow to bail banks borrowing, we might not be able to stop inflation in its ugliest form. Our economy has never been this bad and we're experiencing things that cannot be gauged historically because they've never happened before.

As far as I understand there's nothing about term extensions in the executive branch. The only "extension" I know of is reelection and that can only happen once.
Otherwise I think Clinton would've still been in office.

Not legally -- his term ends by the explicit text of the Constitution in January 2009. No law or executive order can override that, since it's in the plain explicit text.
