close to the surface, is there any reason for that? or is it just psychological?

You're not immagining it, it's because there is more water pressure deeper underwater. This happens because the deeper you go, the more water is pressing down on you, and water is very heavy. It's for the same reason that your ears hurt when you go in the bottom of a really deep dive tank; there's a lot of water pressing down on you. Another example is that at the top of mount Everest, there is less air pressing down on you so it's harder to breathe. We're just used to it at ground level.

start diving from the side. it's how you straighten your body. it should be very smooth like a fish your in and out no matter how deep you go.
