I first guess would be a lack of a good education. Perhaps we should go back to the old school thought if you don't learn you don't pass. Things were different when I went to school, way back in the 1930's and 1940's. Male teachers wore suits with suits and were called Mr, not Bob or Joe or what ever name they preferred. Women wore dresses or pant suit and were called Miss or Mrs . We need to get our teachers respect back. Then we need to start basic subjects Reading, Math, Languages and Geography. one of MY daughters when I went to Australia in 2004 was not sure where I was going, nor was she sure where it was on the map. I find it amazing to me, that kids have no idea were their country is on a map. No wonder kids aren't learning, their language skills are awful to say the least. Some times listen to our athletes being interview on radio or TV and count the "You Knows" you hear. Is this what our nation is becoming?

Ok, this poor young girl was on TV in front of MILLIONS of people, she was nervous, she was naive, and she made a mistake.... I'd sure like to see how any of the rest of YOU could do in that situation... and before you answer THAT one....think LONG and hard...NOT too many of you could stand there like that and say ANYTHING let alone a mixed up answer... so give the poor kid a break...I'm sure she feels embarrassed enough about it as it is.. Put yourself in HER shoes... on and IF 1/5 of all American's cannot locate the US on a world map, it's PROBABLY because 1/5 of all Americans are ILLEGAL MEXICAN ALIENS!!!!!

i will venture to say that it is because our schools and everyone paid with our tax dollars are more motivated now days to point out every thing you cant do then to put any effort into doing anything they need to do.....like teach kids to read a map, or answer a simple question.

Because this is turning into the "OMG, lolz" generation where our nation's youth are more preoccupied with checking their myspace and sending text messages to their friends instead of focusing on important things, like studying.

I really, truly hope that one-fifth of America's population isn't comprised of illegal immigrants, but that statistic makes me wonder...
