Starting at the best, going down to the worst
The Stand
Misery
The Dark Half
Carrie
Christine
The Green Mile
Desperation
Pet Sematery
The Shining
Cujo
It
Bag of Bones
Salem's Lot
Gerald's Game
These are just the ones I've read, and I am not including the 7 volumes of the 'Dark Tower' which form one story but vary in quality. Altogether he's done more than 50 books. 'Cujo' and up on my list I recommend.

Pet Semetary (note, the title is misspelled officially but I can't remember the proper misspelling possibly) scared the wits out of me and it was a great book. Carrie is very good and The Stand left me thinking lots. Thinner, which King wrote under the name of Richard Bachman, is very good too. Did you know author Joe Hill is S. King's son?

It
The Stand
Carrie
The Green Mile
The Shawshank Redemption
The Gunslinger series ( all of them )
Lisey
Christine
The Dead Zone
Salem's Lot
Cell
These are just a few good ones to start with. I think the only one I really did'nt like was Gerald's Game, it was a bit boring for me. Also good are any of the Richard Bachman books, he wrote under this name for a few years and this would include the book Thinner.

Everything I have ever read by Stephen King is awesome. Desperation would be my favorite novel so far. 1408 is my favorite short story so far, it is in his short story collection called Everything's Eventual. The Dark Tower Series is the best series I have ever read. But I would recommend anything by Stephen King.
Here's a list of all of his written works:

I think his best is The Stand but The Talisman is a close second. Rose Madder is a great book to read. "IT" is scary as hell as well as Pet Semetary and Salem's Lot. Christine is spooky so is Cujo. The Shining kept me up for nights. The Dead Zone is good, heck most of his books are good. I didn't care for Dreamcatchers. His short story collections are real real good and his Bachman books are good also. One of his latest "Cell" scared the heck out of me. Happy Reading.

IMHO you should start wih Pet Semetary if you want a scary story or Bog of Bones/Lisey's Story if you want something with depth.
The stand if you want a multi character epic tale of good vs evil

IT is King's best, and masterpiece.
If you are looking for a good fright, though, Pet Sematary.
